On April 25, CYM London had the opportunity to present a workshop for British school students about Ukrainian culture. The event took place as part of the "Lessons at 10' project, which is held weekly at the office of the UK Prime Minister. This particular lesson was significant, as it marked 100 years of cooperation between the United Kingdom and Ukraine.
To commemorate the occasion, a special logo was designed, where each flower represented a different country: the rose for England, the daffodil for Wales, the thistle for Scotland, and the sunflower for Ukraine. Additionally, postage stamps featuring the same design were issued in Ukraine.
Why postage stamps? British school students signed postcards for students in selected Ukrainian schools. For instance, postcards from Rugby’s primary school will be sent to a secondary school in Vinnytsia. The project was presented by the UK Minister of State for Europe and North America, Stephen Doughty, who also oversees external relations with Ukraine. Alongside him at the event was the British Ambassador to Ukraine, Martin Harris.
Students decorated the logo on postcards, wrote a few words about themselves, and entrusted Mr. Harris to deliver the mail to Kyiv, from where the letters will continue their journey to their recipients. Meanwhile, the students will eagerly await replies from Ukraine.
To further introduce Ukrainian culture, CYM members prepared a session on traditional Ukrainian clothing and dance.
Youth educator Iryna Perehinyak shared insights and showcased Ukrainian attire from various regions. Traditional embroidered shirts (vyshyvanky) and costume elements were presented, with students having the chance to try them on—an experience they thoroughly enjoyed!
With the help of CYM youth assistants, students had the opportunity to create Ukrainian wreaths (vinok), decorated with paper flowers and colourful ribbons, as well as embellish letters (choosing the first letter of their name) in an embroidered style.
The highlight of the session was a demonstration and lesson in Ukrainian dance movements, led by CYM London’s cultural leader and educator, Iryna Yankovych.
This workshop was incredibly positive, engaging, and vibrant—just like our Ukrainian culture.
